{"id":369,"date":"2016-10-23T07:59:53","date_gmt":"2016-10-23T07:59:53","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/smursh.net\/blog\/?p=369"},"modified":"2016-10-23T08:06:43","modified_gmt":"2016-10-23T08:06:43","slug":"epic-paleo-meat-bars","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/smursh.net\/blog\/epic-paleo-meat-bars\/","title":{"rendered":"Epic Paleo Meat Bars"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Epic makes these snack\/meal replacement bars composed mostly of dried &#8220;non-cured&#8221; meat.<\/p>\n<p>The meat is cured using celery powder which has naturally occurring nitrites in it, which are curing agents. \u00a0I wish manufacturers would stop the bullshit with this &#8220;no nitrites added&#8221; claim.<\/p>\n<p>Anyway, it&#8217;s cured meat, like jerky. \u00a0And each bar has a jerky-like taste and consistency.<\/p>\n<p>Overall, the texture of the meats has\u00a0been dry and not tender, but not as tough as jerky. \u00a0Some of the bars come apart when you bite into them, and you quickly realize that this bar is composed of small, individual pieces of meat which have been compressed together.<\/p>\n<p>The bar that had the best texture was lamb, which was fairly soft. \u00a0I enjoyed the texture and taste of the bar. \u00a0The worst so far was the turkey, which was dry and obviously particulated.<\/p>\n<p>I got a sampler, and I&#8217;ll go through my experiences with each.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Bison: Bacon Cranberry<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The bar was a bit dry, and a little tough. \u00a0The taste was decent. \u00a0The overall taste was sweet and savory, and I enjoyed the cranberries, which were whole and not at all bitter. \u00a0You can taste the bacon. \u00a0The overall flavor, however, like with most of these bars was very &#8220;jerky-ish.&#8221; \u00a0I don&#8217;t think this is one that I would purchase again. \u00a05 out of 10.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Bison: Habanero Cherry<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Same texture as above. \u00a0The cherry flavor is mostly sweet and mild. \u00a0You can barely recognize it as cherry. \u00a0I would have preferred more tartness. \u00a0The tartness of cherry is almost non-existent. \u00a0Also, you can barely perceive the habanero, which to me was very disappointing. \u00a0I know habanero is too hot for most people, but I like it. \u00a0The concept of the bar is wonderful. \u00a0The combination of cherry, habanero, and bison sounds awesome. \u00a0The delivery, however, is lackluster. \u00a04 out of 10.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Turkey: Almond Cranberry<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Driest texture of any of the bars, a little tough but not really. \u00a0It is dry in your mouth, and the inclusion of nuts doesn&#8217;t\u00a0help that. \u00a0The flavor isn&#8217;t so bad, but it&#8217;s really dry and you can barely taste the cranberries. \u00a0Unlike the bison bar, this bar had no identifiable cranberry in it. \u00a0The moisture of a whole cranberry every so often would have been welcome. \u00a0I almost couldn&#8217;t eat this bar. \u00a02 out of 10.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Lamb: Currant Mint<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Best texture out of all of them. \u00a0It was soft and savory, and a little moist. \u00a0I could not taste the mint. \u00a0The currant offers a sweetness, but not a strong currant flavor. \u00a0I think jacking up the mint and currant flavor would have helped a bit. \u00a0Despite that, I really liked this bar. \u00a0While I was eating it I thought, &#8220;Yeah, this is something I could eat everyday, no problem.&#8221; \u00a07, maybe 8, out of 10.<\/p>\n<p>More to come as I consume\u00a0more of the sampler&#8230;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Epic makes these snack\/meal replacement bars composed mostly of dried &#8220;non-cured&#8221; meat.
